You may be referring to the small window of time right before the new release of QuickBooks.

During that time, Intuit does offer some incentives to upgrade for minimal or no cost. But that is right around the release date of the new version - 2013 came out a while back (I believe it was in Sept 2012), so that wouldn't be an option now.

I am unsure about whether Intuit honors that for purchases elsewhere - you'd have to check with them.

There's been discussion in various locations about whether a lately purchased copy of QuickBooks 2012 will earn a totally free upgrade to the 2013 software program. The question is whether it needs to be purchased directly from Intuit or not – yet others are saying a buy anywhere will qualify, even if it's at a discounted cost from Staples.
